Abby and Zack came to me by way of the always delightful Amy Guthridge from Engaging Affairs. Now I got to chat on the phone with Abby and Zack but never met them until the day of their engagement session. But Abby sent me some pictures of the new craftsman-style home which they had just bought and suggested that they might like to do their engagement session at their house. And my brain started working. I thought wouldn’t it be fun to shoot a sort of “Sunday morning at home” sort of editorial-style engagement session. Maybe even a little retro throwback. It all started to come together when I arrived on a Friday afternoon (not a Sunday morning) and we picked out some clothes and just played for a couple of hours. I loved how we were to use various parts of their home to make it really personalized while still keeping the focus on Abby & Zack and their lifestyle. Hope you enjoy!

So excited for your wedding in October…exactly 2 years after my own wedding. :)

Today I bring you yet one more DC couple who I met on the actual day of their engagement session, Danielle & Ken. On their suggestion we decided to shoot at the farmer’s market in Old Town Alexandria, VA. It was a cloudy, chilly morning but I had such a blast getting to know these two whose wedding is sure to be just as adorably charming as they are. Danielle’s family owns grocery stores so their reception is going to be grocery market inspired, how cool is that? They are going to incorporate locally grown foods and have the decor of the space inspired by the way a market would be set up. I just can’t wait to see what they pull off with the help of my great friend and wedding coordinator extraordinaire, Sara Muchnick. And now, a few images from our shoot.

Our own little ode to “American Gothic.”

During my last trip to DC, I photographed the engagement sessions of 3 couples, none of whom I had met before the day I shot them. Now sometimes it’s tough to get into a groove when you shake someone’s hand for the first time, say “nice to meet you” and then ask them to be themselves and share some very intimate moments with you. It’s a challenge but one that I always look forward to, even if it scares me just a little bit.
So when I met Cheri & Trop a couple of weeks ago in Cady’s Alley in Georgetown for their engagement session, they walked up to me coffee in hand and I was immediately at ease. I thought, hey…I thought I’m the one who’s supposed to be making them feel comfortable. So we spent the next hour or so bumming around near the Potomac and eventually had to go get a beer together. These two definitely knew how to have fun in front of the camera as you’ll see…they would literally have done anything I asked them to. So I’m very much looking forward to their wedding next May at Woodend, another wedding with my great friend Sara Muchnick.

My thought was “oh, cool let’s get the helicopter in the background of this one”…I didn’t find out until later that it was actually Marine One which may or may not have been carrying President Obama. I tried zooming in to see if he was waving at us through the window. :)

Okay, I’m not responsible for this one. The direction I gave them was “go stand by that bike & pretend it’s yours”…actually sitting on it was their idea. :)
